Let’s Review The New WFTDA minimum skills

The WFTDA just released a brand new set of minimum skills requirements 

Notable changes:

  • The 25 laps in 5 minutes requirement is now 27 laps in 5 minutes. 
  • Skaters now must be able to skate one lap in 13 seconds, starting from a standstill.
  • The falling section is now a “recovery” section. 
  • The terms “brisk” and “moderate” pace are defined.
  • You have to be able to cross over the other way. Skating in the derby direction, that means stepping with your left foot over your right foot from the inside line to the outside line.
  • Transitions are required. (Turning around.) (To the left and right)

For those players who are already able to complete the previous minimum skills, this is a relatively easy task to complete. A lot of these skills come naturally to an experienced skater without having to be taught.

However, for a new skater this is a much harder challenge to complete. It’s pushed the marker of a competent skater and everyone is having to up their game.

This is a new era in roller derby. The minimum skills are there for safety reasons to keep everybody playing at a similar standard in a very dangerous sport.

As a whole, we feel that getting players to raise their standards is never a bad thing, challenging but safer. Players will now have to work on their speed, stamina and skills which will overall prevent a lot of the injuries that are occurring unnecessarily at trainings and bouts.
